Benjamin Britten Hymn to the Virgin
Nicholas Maw One Foot in Eden Still, I Stand
Britten Cantata misericordium
Gabriel Fauré Requiem
The eloquence of the young Benjamin Britten…
One of Britain’s most important living composers, Nicholas Maw…
The shimmering, impressionistic Requiem of Gabriel Fauré…
Cantata Singers launches the 2008-2009 season with a concert that reaches beyond the public faces of these three composers to reveal the intimate, private side of each artist.
Our year-long engagement with the music of Britten begins with the 16-year-old Britten’s luminous unaccompanied A Hymn to the Virgin, paired with his moving Cantata misericordium, composed 30 years later to honor the founding of the Red Cross. The beautiful One Foot in Eden, composed by Nicholas Maw is a contemporary nod to the tradition of the venerable English anthem. The concert closes with Fauré’s gorgeous Requiem in all its pure beauty.
This is music that is provocative and that draws us in, that asks us to come to it more than it comes to us. The rewards of that journey, no matter its length, are infinite.
