First performance
Benjamin Britten Psalm 150
J.S. Bach Cantata BWV 50
Through vital performances of works old and new, familiar and unfamiliar, the Cantata Singers shares with the community the power of music to enrich the human spirit.
These are the words that describe our mission – and how appropriate that they describe the culminating concert of the 2008-2009 Britten season.
We celebrate the fifteenth year of our innovative education program, Classroom Cantatas, by bringing its fruits to the Jordan Hall series. Participating students and the Boston Children’s Chorus will perform one of their hot-off-the-press, original cantatas, coupled with a newly commissioned composition for Cantata Singers by Andy Vores. Both works will be based on the same texts - works of Gerard Manley Hopkins, Christina Rossetti and Charles Darwin - that celebrate the wonders of the natural world.
Britten’s Psalm 150 challenges and delights performers and listeners, both young and old. This concert and the season close with Britten’s The Company of Heaven, a radio drama of poetry and music composed in 1937 – an endearing work of enduring vigor and freshness.
