James Dargan, bass
James Dargan is a baritone and violinist who, after degrees in religion,
music, and English literature from Boston and Leeds Universities, decided that life without copious
amounts of singing was not worth living; James decided to study voice, and took lessons with Dr.
Anton Belov and Dr. Jerrold Pope, along with masterclass work with Penelope Bitzas, Karyl
Ryzcek, Lynn Torgove, and Sondra Kelly. As a violinist, James has been coached by members of
the Juilliard and Borromeo String Quartets, and studied with Dorothy Kitchen, Sarah Johnson, and
Nicholas Kitchen. While in the UK, James performed in many early music and choral groups,
including the Leeds Baroque Ensemble and Choir, and the York Minster Cathedral choir (as Bass
choral scholar). Since moving back to Boston, James has appeared in many productions and
concerts, including Tosca, Le Nozze di Figaro, Romeo et Juliette, a one-on-a-part version of the Bach B
Minor Mass, and he is very proud to be a member of Cantata Singers.
