Mr. Arnold has also performed major works with the orchestras of Philadelphia, Chicago, San Francisco, Baltimore, Detroit, Atlanta, Houston, Hartford, St. Louis, New Haven, the American Symphony the American Composers Orchestra, et al. His debut with Andre Previn was made in the Brahms Requiem which was broadcast nationally, as was his performance of the Beethoven Ninth Symphony with the San Francisco Symphony. His Beethoven Ninth, with Maestro Slatkin and the St. Louis Symphony, was broadcast nationally and toured Japan. Messiah is a work he has sung with the orchestras of San Francisco, Indianapolis, Hartford, the Handel & Haydn Society of Boston and the Boston Baroque.

In opera, David Arnold has won acclaim as Enrico in Lucia, Ford in Falstaff, and the Count in The Marriage of Figaro performed at the Philadelphia Academy of Music, and for L’Opera de Quebec; his appearances as Emperor Jones in that opera’s revival prompted a comparison by the composer’s widow of David Arnold to Lawrence Tibbett, whom she saw create the role at the Met in 1933. The composer John Harbison has twice chosen Mr. Arnold for starring roles in world premieres of his operas Winter’s Tale and Full Moon in March. His debut at the New York City Opera as Zurga in Pecheur de Perles was widely acclaimed by the New York press. Mr. Arnold has sung Amonasro in Aida with the Opera Company of Boston (opposite Shirley Verrett), and elsewhere with conductors Sarah Caldwell, Badea, Choset and DeMain. He has performed Creon in Oedipus Rex in San Francisco and Dandini in La Cenerentola with the Virginia Opera, and appeared as Escamillo in Carmen opposite Cossotto and Luchetti with Tulsa Opera. He appears regularly with the Boheme Opera Company of New Jersey.

Mr. Arnold’s solo recording of Zaimont’s The Magic World was released in 1984 on Leonarda Records, as was his recording of John Harbison’s Full Moon in March on CRI; Arabesque Records released his Walpurgisnacht in 1986. In 1994 he recorded the new Levin edition of the Mozart Requiem and the Brahms orchestration of Schubert Songs; in 1995 he recorded Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass for Koch Classics, and Elijah, Mendelsohn’s masterpiece was released in 1999. Also coming out this fall is Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, recorded at Trinity Cathedral in Portland, Oregon, as well as Paul Moravec’s Songs of Love and War, recorded with the Dessoff Choirs in New York City. Other roles which he has frequently performed are Belcore in L’Elisir d’amore by Donizetti, Sharpless in Madama Butterfly, and Ramiro in L’Heure Espagnole.

Performing abroad, Mr. Arnold has appeared with the Spoleto Festival in Italy, toured Austria and Yugoslavia in concert, and has also performed with the Holland Festival in Amsterdam, with L’Opera de Montreal as Amonasro in Aida, L’Opera de Quebec as the Count in Le Nozze di Figaro, as Marcello in La Boheme at the Bath Opera Company (England) and has been on the roster of the famed Komische Oper in Berlin and the English National Opera. He made his debut with the Singapore Orchestra in 1999 singing works by Haydn.

He sang the world premiere of David Diamond’s Ninth Symphony for Baritone and Orchestra, conducted by Leonard Bernstein, at Carnegie Hall in 1985, and has portrayed the High Priest in Samson and Delilah with Maestro James Conlon and the Cincinnati May Festival.
