CLASSROOM CANTATAS EVENTS 2002 You are invited to attend the following events
culminating in the premiere performances of the 2002 Classroom Cantatas,
written by 4th, 6th , 9th and 12th
graders in Boston Public Schools as part of the Cantata Singers’ educational
outreach program. This year the program
has introduced over 100 students to song writing and singing, and is employing
14 members of the Cantata Singers and Guest Chorus as an outstanding core group
of teachers, group leaders and singers. The events include student performances and sessions where students meet with T.J. Anderson. (click here for Adult Outreach events)
(click here for TV, Radio and Print Media events) Wednesday, March 6, 10:00-10:45pm Shirley-Eustis House, 33 Shirley Street, Roxbury (directions) Fourth graders from Ralph Waldo Emerson Elementary School perform
their cantata about Beacon Hill’s Sarah Roberts and her family who along with Robert
Morris and Charles Sumner fought a legal battle culminating in an 1855 law
allowing black children to attend schools with whites. Thurday, March 7, 12:15-1:00pm Henry Dearborn Middle School, 35 Greenville Avenue, Roxbury (directions) Sixth grade students perform their cantata inspired by their reading of Mildred Taylor’s Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry. Monday, March 11, 11:30-12:25pm Fenway High School, Auditorium, 147 Ipswich Street, Boston (directions) Ninth grade students present their cantata based on the question "What gives me comfort and hope in hard times?" Their answer: music, family, friends and God. TBD Juniors and Seniors from African American History classes at Dorchester's Jeremiah Burke High School will perform their cantata about slavery for neighboring Holland Elementary School students. STUDENTS MEET WITH T.J. ANDERSON Monday, February 25, 10:30-11:30am African Meeting House, 46 Joy Street, Boston Emerson Elementary 4th graders and Dearborn Middle School 6th graders perform their cantatas in a class with T.J. Anderson. Wednesday, February 27, 11:15-12:25pm Fenway High School, 174 Ipswich St., Boston (directions) Fenway High School 9th graders perform their cantata in a class with T.J. Anderson Wednesday, February 27, 2:00-2:30pm Boston Arts Academy, 174 Ipswich St. Boston (directions) Vocal majors of BAA meet with T.J. Anderson to discuss Slavery Documents 2. Thursday, February 28, 8:45-10:00 a.m. Jeremiah Burke High School, 60 Washington St., Dorchester (directions) African American History classes and
vocal students meet with T.J. Anderson to discuss his career and Slavery
Documents 2. Classroom Cantata students sing and discuss their cantata and the composition process with T.J. Anderson.
